I don’t remember the name of the tune in Rogers’ & Hammerstein’s Carousel, but Il remember the rest of the lyic. Let’s see, for the halibut how MUCH I remember. . . . “Woodpeckers peck it on wood. There’s nothin’ so bad for a woman as a man who thinks he’s good.”
And then a woman begins to sing (I think she was Shirley Jones) “What’s the good of wonderin’ if he’s good or if he’s bad, or if you like the way he” (I forgot this part) ? And that’s okay because my involvement in this classical lyric ends with “stone.” Btw, it’s a beautiful musical and if you’re not familiar with it, GET WITH THE FRIKKING PROGRAM.
My summer substitute teaching sabbatical is being spent (a few days a week) with a business called The Granite Guy in Spingfield. I’ll ‘xplain in future postings how the connection was made. For now suffice to say his is my summer SALVATION. I LIVE from this.
The last check from substitute teaching arrived today. The rest of the summer, I am subservient to the will of friends and a beneficent cosmos. Come to think of it, I guess I always was.
Ooo bla dee, eew bla dah: life.
Live long . . . . . and proper.
For you, Job … so you don’t wake up at three in the morning thinking, “WAIT! Now, I remember!”
Carousel
Stonecutters Cut It On Stone
Jigger
I’ve never seen it yet to fail
I’ll never see it fail
A girl who’s in love with a virtuous man
Is doomed to weep and wail
Stonecutters cut it on stone
Woodpeckers peck it on wood
There’s nothin’ so bad for a woman
As a man who thinks he’s good!
Nice talk!
My mother used to say to me
When you grow up, my son
I hope you’re a bum like your father was
‘Cause a good man ain’t no fun!
Jigger and Men
Stonecutters cut it on stone
Woodpeckers peck it on wood
There’s nothin’ so bad for a woman
As a man who thinks he’s good!
Enoch
‘T ain’t so!
Jigger
‘T is true!
All
‘T ain’t so!
Jigger and Men
‘T is true!
Carrie and Girls
I’ve never seen it yet to fail
I’ll never see it fail
A girl who’s in love with any man
Is doomed to weep and wail.
Girl 1
They’re even worse after they marry you!
Girl 2
You oughta give ‘im that ring back, Carrie!
You’ll be better off!
Girl 3
Well, he’s a mighty, unmarried man,
You should take ‘im!
Carrie
The clock just takes your life away
There’s no relief in sight
It’s cookin’ an’ it’s scrubbin’
An’ it’s sewin’ all day
An’ God knows what in all night!
Girls
Stonecutters cut it on stone
Woodpeckers peck it on wood
There’s nothin’ so bad for a woman
As a man who’s bad or good!
THIRTYWHAT –
I’m glad I don’t have to pay you by the word for your generous expenditure of time and prodigious memory. Thanks for sharing the lyrics! It’s one of my fave musicals, but I never memorized the words to that song. It seemed so out of gender for me. It was/is a terrific song and lyric.
If you could SING (and I don’t know that you’re can’t) you’d be dangerous!
