It was never my intention to stop encouraging public appreciation of Springfield arts and arts organization. My problem was always with those who COULD support my Central Illinois Visual Artist Galleries website and did not. My desire for the ARTS to prosper in this town is stronger than my disdain for the FARTS; hence this, the first of seveeral central Illinois arts news releases I will be sharing here with you.
“Stitches in Time,” an innovative 19th century clothing program series at Springfield historic sites, continues the first weekend in June with a program about the 19th century fan language.
The Springfield Art Association will present “The Language of Fans” 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Edwards Place Historic Home, 700 N. 4th St. Curator of Collections Amanda Gleason will discuss fan language in Victorian society; visitors can also decorate their own fans and practice fan language. A display of Victorian and other antique fans from the SAA Permanent Collection will accompany the activity. This event is free and open to the public.
“Stitches in Time” is a new partnership between private, state and federal historic sites that began in April and runs through October. The public will enjoy numerous opportunities to learn what people were wearing, why cloth and fabric were important, and how clothes and fashion shaped the lives of everyday people.
