Factory Windows Are Always Broken
by Vachel Lindsay of Springfield, Illinois
Factory windows are always broken.
Somebody’s always throwing bricks.
Somebody’s always heaving cinders,
Playing ugly Yahoo tricks.
Factory windows are always broken.
Other windows are let alone.
No one hurls through the church door window
The bitter, snarling, derisive stone.
Factory windows are always broken.
Something or other is going wrong.
Something is rotten, I think, in Denmark.
End of the factory window song.

The first time I read this poem, I heard the melody that I’ve shared with my guitar accompaniment, almost every time I’ve presented it since learning it. I have a hunch, a melody may even come to you if you read it again. This is a good thing. I believe that Vachel’s poem, written in 1914, speaks to today as well. What do you think?
Live long . . . . . and proper..
