Abraham Lincoln Visitors’ Center is hosting a Halloween observance for the kids 5 to 7 pm Friday, October 26. The whole Lincoln Home area will be decorated for Halloween. Activities include volunteers in period clothing and costumes, re-enactors around a campfire wtih the 114th Regiment, Illinois Volunteeer Invantry Civil War, and the 29th US Colored Troops. The Museum of Funeral Customs giving an embalming demonstration, Job Conger will recite the poem “Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight” by Vachel Lindsay (AND OTHER POEMS by Vachel and Job and some original/traditional folk songs) and there will be TRICK-OR-TREATING FOR CANDY at 12 historic houses in the neighborhood. The houses will NOT be open for tours. This is a volunteer gig for yours truly, but I was delighted to be invited back. They’re still passing around the kind letter to the SJ-R Joe Coffey wrote about my part in the last event at the Visitor Center. — THANKS AGAIN JOE!
Saturday night October 27, at First Presbyterian Church, 7th at Capitol, Springfield Classical Guitar Society presents its fort concern of the 2007/08 season, Calos Perez, starting at 8:00 pm. This gentleman appears in our little town for the first time. By all accounts, this Chilean master is one hot tamale! He has recorded five CDs and will have them available for purchase during and after what promises to be terrific concert. Tickets ($12 for regular folks and discounted for students and seniors) are available at the door. COME JUAN, COME ALL.
On a related writing point, I am creating a new poem I will share with other hummin’ beans for the first time at the Vachel Lindsay Birthday Celebration at the Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site, Saturday, November 10. It’s about Vachel coming home to live after completing his life, virtually, in Spokane, Washington. More about this blockbusting event in the fucia.
Make LIFE; not WOE!
